Cyclone Nivar Latest News: Cyclone Nivar will bring winds between 120 and 130 km per hour, with gusts of up to 145 km per hour.

Cyclone Nivar is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Chennai when it makes landfall between Mamallapuram (which is 56 km from Chennai) in TamilNadu and Karaikal in Puducherry today.

The Chennai airport has suspended operations in view of the Cyclone Nivar. The airport authority announced on Wednesday evening that aircraft operations and serrvices at the Chennai airport would remain suspended from today evening (7 pm) to tomorrow morning (7 am).

The IMD said a storm surge of about two metres above the sea level was likely around the time of landfall, causing inundation of low-lying areas. Cyclone Nivar would bring winds between 120 and 130 km per hour, with gusts of up to 145 km per hour, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai advised, adding that coastal areas could receive heavy rains till Thursday.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted to assure the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry governments of all possible support.

The Railways has cancelled over a dozen special trains on November 25 and 26 scheduled to either originate from and terminate in the southern states of the country in view of the impending cyclone Nivar, and offered full refund.
